We rescued a stray two weeks ago. I noticed her abdomen was distended and took her to the vet. The vet said it was slightly enlarged but did not seem concerned. The kitten was treated for worms and ear mites. She is thin but has a good appetite. She plays with my Chihuahua but is very mellow and relaxed a lot of the time. I am concerned about FIP but have not done any labs because they are expensive and not of diagnostic value. If she does have acites from FIP how fast will it progress and what symptoms should I be looking out for? Could anything else cause an enlarged abdomen. It is not extremely large but puffy.

I too have a kitten who is possibly FIP. The vets don't know. I got him as a foster at 5 weeks and he is now 3 months old. He had a fever, loss of appetite and at 8 weeks had gone down to to 14 oz. weight. They gave him metacam and I syringe fed him a/d for a few weeks until he started to eat on his own. The fever is now gone and he is eating the a/d on his own and picking at his dry food.

The vets said there is no sure test to determine or rule it out. Initially he had a distended belly due to parasites and the drontal took care of that.

He does have irregular pupils and what appears to be cataracts, and that is what is concerning the vets, as it is possibly tied to the FIP.

Is your kitty active with her toys? Its a good sign that she is eating. Mine is for now, so we can only wait and see... I wish you all the best for you and your kitty!
