need help on long time risks with medication

Post a new topicby maryluzalvarez on Sun Aug 01, 2010 4:54 pm

Hello,

I am 50 years old and i was diagnosticated at 27 as being bipolar. Since then I have been taking medication and it has had good results except when I was pregnant. For the first 15 years I was medicated with lithium, prozac and seroquel. But my father, who is bipolar too, almost died from a lithium intoxication, Since then, my psychriatist recomended me to change the lithium for valproic acid, which I have tolerated really well and it has lowered my frequent headeaches.
Now that I am becoming 50, I have been recognizing some probable side effects and i, would like to know if there is any information or research that can help. I recognize a memory loss, slowness in activities, difficulty with being enthusiastic and verbal and written major difficulty in communication. I feel my intelligence has been severly affected and restricted. I have no idea if this is a result of taking the medicines for such a long time, or if there is anything that can help me improve this conditions.

If anyone can help me I will be glad to receive your information.
