ankle fracture with complications

Post a new topicby astongirl on Fri Nov 20, 2009 1:44 pm

On 28th June, I slipped in the garden and broke my ankle, I went to hospital in an ambulance, they were great, I was put in a inflatable cast, and taken to my local hospital, they streightened it and put it into a cast, telling me I had to be transfered to another hospital for surgery, whilst waiting I was given a pain killing injection of codene sulphate, and had a bad reaction to it.
I was later transfered to another hospital and had surgery two days later, went home the next day.
I had my stitches removed eight days later, the foot was very swolen but I was still put in plaster and sent home, I went to England and a week later a smell was coming from my cast, so went to hospital.
My pcps were 321 and am told normal is 4. I was very unwell.
Over the next week I had three visits to theatre to wash out my wound. then told I needed plastic surgery to close the wound, but I had to be transfered to another hospital. a week later I was. after a couple of days I had my fourth operation, this was to put more screws in where the plates and screws were already but needed more and the inner bone had not been fixed at all and it needed opening and screwing together. Then the plastic surgery team did their work,
Too cut a long story short, after five and a half weeks I went home after learning from a conversation between nurses at the end of my bed that I had osteomyelitis I had been kept in hospital three extra weeks because nobody was able to administer intravenus antibiotics then sent home with oral tabs. but told I had to go back for more plastic surgery because the bottom half of the graft did'ent work.
More surgery and still not closed because a screw continues to show. I am not sure if this will ever be over. Has anyone ever had such bad luck? or is it just me?

Well you are not theonly onewith such bad luck. Although my injury is not similiar to yours, my journey through having complications with my ankle are the same. Before I even ha dmy first operation it was clear to me that i was travling down a road with no end.
I had a sharp pain in my ankle when moving laterally and for the life of me could not understand where it came from. Did not slip, fall, twist or injure my ankle. So since there was no related injury, didn't seek medical attention until after a month of pain. I was baffled as too were the doctors because they couldn't tell me what was wrong nor could they prescribe a procedure that diminished the pain. Boots, kructhes, non-weight bearing, x-rays, mri's nothing. After 8 months oftrial and error, they finnaly took an old school cat scan thay located a cyst eating away my ankle.
Long story short, after 5 operations my ankle is still not right and I have been doing research on my own to find the light at the end of the tunnel....
